About Us

Discover a world of knowledge, inspiration, and community at Purva Vibhag Sarvajanik Vachanalay, where learning meets endless possibilities

Our History

The Eastern Division Public Library has a legacy rooted in the early 1930s, initially established as a branch of the General Library at Padmashali Bhavanam, Aashikal Maidan, to cater to the growing educated population. On 4th December 1975, a new branch was inaugurated at Madda Mangal office, led by prominent figures like Sarvashri Jayantrao Jakkal and Vinkarratna Gangadharpant Kuchan. The library expanded rapidly, supported by lifelong memberships for handloom weavers and funds from Solapur MP Kuchan.

The library aims to promote knowledge, education, and cultural engagement through diverse resources, including books on politics, science, women’s crafts, and employment opportunities. Events like World Book Day, Dr. Ranganathan Jayanti, and literary competitions encourage reading and community participation. Over the years, it hosted significant conventions, celebrated its Golden Jubilee, and established facilities like a competitive exam study center with gender-segregated halls.

The library operates from a two-story building with dedicated departments for women, children, newspapers, and reference services. It has received prestigious awards, including the Babasaheb Ambedkar Excellent Library Award (1995) and the Adarsh Library Award (2010). The silver jubilee celebrations in 1999 marked the inauguration of new premises by Maharashtra CM Vilasrao Deshmukh, overcoming financial hurdles through government and municipal grants, particularly contributions from President Pandurang Diddi.

At Purva Vibhag Sarvajanik Vachanalaya, we pride ourselves on our commitment to fostering a lifelong love for reading and learning. Our extensive collection not only serves the educational needs of students but also caters to the diverse interests of the entire community. With years of experience, we equip our patrons with the resources they need to thrive academically and personally.

Our dedicated staff comprises knowledgeable librarians and passionate book enthusiasts who are always ready to assist visitors. With expertise in various fields of study, they provide personalized guidance and support to ensure that every patron finds the resources they seek.

Vision & Values

The library aims to foster a love for reading among citizens by organizing cultural programs, celebrating social and national festivals, and implementing various government schemes. It provides information about new books to young readers and commemorates Independence Day, Republic Day, and the birth anniversaries of notable leaders through activities like lecture series, oratory competitions, poetry and theater events, book exhibitions, and educational programs. To achieve its goals, the library plans to raise funds, expand its branches, establish buildings where possible, and incorporate advanced computer technologies. Additionally, it envisions offering certificate, diploma, degree, and postgraduate courses while implementing necessary programs to fulfill these objectives.
