The eastern part of Solapur is often called the ‘remarkable eastern region,’ mainly because of its large Telugu-speaking population. Around 100-125 years ago, thousands of hardworking Telugu-speaking people migrated from Telangana and Andhra Pradesh to Solapur and settled along Hyderabad Road, which marks the city’s eastern direction. They not only embraced Marathi culture but also enriched it.

Established in 1974, fifty years ago, the Purvibhag Sarvajanik Vachanalay (Eastern Public Library) stands as a symbol of this cultural harmony and deep-rooted love for Marathi literature among Telugu speakers.

Despite being Telugu-speaking, all the office-bearers and readers of this Marathi library have an immense love for Marathi literature. The library houses a vast collection of 35,000 books, including stories, novels, plays, essays, and various other subjects. It attracts senior citizens, students, women, and children who come here to read with great enthusiasm. At a time when reading habits are said to be declining, the love of this Telugu-speaking community for Marathi literature is truly inspiring and encouraging.

The Marathi daily newspaper Samachar, which started a hundred years ago, had a Telugu-speaking editor, Jayantrao Jakkal. He laid the foundation of the Purvibhag Sarvajanik Vachanalay (Eastern Public Library). Several notable figures later contributed to the library’s growth, including the late senior poet Lakshminarayan Bolli, former Cooperation Minister Ramkrishnapant Bet, former MP Gangadhar Kuchan, former Mayor Puran Chandra Punjal, Janardan Karampuri, actor Nagesh Kanna, Rajaram Kuchan, Bhoomayya Konda, and former MP Dharmanna Sadul.

The library started in a small 10x10 room. Later, to secure its own space, then-MP Gangadhar Kuchan encouraged many weavers to become lifetime members and raised funds from them. Even today, Telugu speakers dominate Solapur’s cooperative spinning mills and cooperative banks. These institutions provided significant funding, helping the library construct its own building.

Today, this library holds an ‘A’ grade status from the state government. Its current president is Pandurang Diddi, a former Solapur Municipal Corporation councilor. He explains, “We do not charge fees from child readers. In fact, we deliver books to their homes. Currently, 421 children benefit from this service. For women, we only take a refundable deposit of ₹50 and do not charge a monthly fee. About 441 women are associated with the library.”

The library is housed in a three-story building. The ground floor has rental shops, and the income from these shops is used for library maintenance. The second floor houses the main library, while the third floor has an auditorium for lectures and events. There is also a dedicated air-conditioned section for students preparing for competitive exams. Presently, around 100 girls and 125 boys study there daily, with free access to exam preparation books and Wi-Fi services. Many students who studied here have successfully secured government jobs.

Every year, the library makes at least 75 Marathi Diwali Ank (special festive editions) available to readers. Additionally, it subscribes to 26 Marathi daily newspapers, 2 English dailies, 5 Marathi fortnightlies, 25 Marathi weeklies, and 71 monthly magazines.

A unique aspect of the young readers who visit this library is that, despite coming from Telugu-speaking families, they study in Marathi-medium schools. Interestingly, the directors of these Marathi schools are also Telugu speakers.

The Kuchan Marathi Prashala in Solapur was established 112 years ago and currently has over 1,000 students. The Pulli Girls' School has a similar number of students, while Burla College also enrolls hundreds of students. A large number of readers from these educational institutions are actively associated with the library.

The library organizes various programs throughout the year, including lectures, elocution competitions, quizzes, and storytelling sessions.

Library secretary Arvind Chini says, “All the speakers in our lecture series are Marathi-speaking, but the audience is primarily Telugu. Recently, we have also started keeping Telugu and Kannada books.”

Poet Lakshminarayan Bolli beautifully captured the Marathi love of the Telugu-speaking community in two lines:
"Though every vein of mine speaks Andhra,
The melody in my heart belongs to Marathi!"
